Black Mold Symptoms vs. an Indiana Allergy Season: Telling Them Apart
Symptoms make terrible evidence in central Indiana, because the calendar out here supplies a reason to feel awful for most of the year. Tree pollen runs heavy from late March into May, grass takes over through early summer and ragweed arrives in August and holds until the first hard freeze. Wet leaf litter in Holliday Park and Eagle Creek Park throws its own spores every autumn. A stuffy head in this region proves nothing at all about your crawl space.
So the useful question is not how bad the symptoms are. It is whether they track the house or the calendar. Symptoms that ease within a couple of hours of leaving home and return the same evening are pointing at the building. Symptoms that follow you to the office, to the car and out onto the Monon Trail are pointing at the air everybody else is breathing too.

What people mean when they say black mold
The phrase is a nickname rather than a species. It usually refers to one dark greenish growth that turns up on wet paper-faced drywall and wet wood, though the same phrase gets attached to any dark patch anybody finds in a basement. The symptom lists that circulate with it are congestion, cough, itchy eyes, headache and fatigue. That is the whole problem with them. Those are the identical symptoms an Indianapolis ragweed season delivers to half the neighborhood every September without any help from a building.
A list of symptoms cannot name a species. It cannot even reliably separate an indoor exposure from an outdoor one. The shade of a patch is not much better as evidence, since plenty of harmless growth is dark and some of the growth worth worrying about is not. To an inspector the color of a stain mainly indicates where to point the moisture meter first.
The part most people skip is that all of it needs the same thing, which is water that keeps arriving. That is the finding that changes what you actually do next. It is also findable, which a species name on its own frequently is not.
The central Indiana calendar, in plain terms
Knowing roughly what is happening outside makes the house test far easier to run. Maples and then oaks load the air from the end of March through May. Grass pollen peaks around the time school lets out. Ragweed starts in the second half of August and does not quit until a real freeze. Past the suburban ring the county line opens into working farmland on the east, south and west sides, so harvest dust and field spores ride in on the same wind.
Autumn adds outdoor mold to the mix. Wet leaves piled along the streets of Irvington and Meridian-Kessler are an enormous spore source. So is the mulch bed against the north side of the house. Outdoor spore counts in October can run higher than what is in most basements, which is the reason an indoor air sample means very little without a same-day outdoor sample to hold it against.
There is one more local pattern worth knowing. A lot of people here feel worse the week the furnace comes on for the first time and again the week the air conditioning starts. That is not the season changing. That is the duct system moving air across surfaces that sat still for six months. It points indoors.
Patterns that point at the house instead of the season
The clearest one is the vacation test. If you feel noticeably better by the second day away and worse again the first night back, the building is a real suspect. Pollen travels with you across the Midwest. A crawl space does not.
The second is the room. Symptoms worst on waking, in a bedroom sitting over a crawl space or in a finished basement bedroom, are a much stronger signal than symptoms spread evenly through the day. Air moves upward through a house as warm air rises and leaves at the top. It pulls replacement air in from the lowest and dampest space available, which in a vented crawl space is exactly what you would rather not be breathing.
The third is the mismatch. When one person in the household reacts hard and nobody else does, an individual allergy is likelier than a house-wide problem. When several people react and only at home, the building moves up the list. A fourth pattern worth watching is the shower. A bathroom that fogs for twenty minutes after anybody uses it, on an exterior wall, in a house with no working exhaust fan, generates its own local problem that has nothing to do with the crawl space or the season.
None of this is proof of anything. It is how to decide whether measuring the air is worth the trouble and the cost.
What an air sample settles and what it cannot
An air test measures what is floating indoors and weighs it against outdoor air pulled the same afternoon on the same equipment. That comparison is the entire point. Indoor numbers that look like the outdoor numbers suggest the house is mostly reflecting the neighborhood, which in an Indianapolis October is saying something. Indoor numbers well above the outdoor baseline, especially with a different mix of species, say there is a reservoir inside.
It will not tell you where. It will not tell you what a person should do medically. It will also mislead you if the windows have been open all week, because then the indoor air is simply the outdoor air with extra steps. Ask the inspector how long the house should be closed up before sampling and whether to leave the system running.
The other honest limit is that a normal result is a real result. Plenty of homeowners get a reading close to the outdoor control and stop chasing the house, which spares them a tear-out they were within a week of paying for. That is a good outcome even though it feels like an anticlimax.
If the count does come back high, the sample has done its job and handed the question back to somebody with a flashlight. A high reading is a reason to go under the floor and look. It is not a location.
When to call a doctor before you call anybody about the building
Persistent asthma, a wheeze that is getting worse, a small child or an infant in the room, anybody on immune-suppressing treatment: those go to a physician first and the building second. Air sampling is slow and a person who is struggling to breathe needs care now.
The building work still matters afterward. A doctor can treat the reaction and cannot find the water under your floor. Both halves of the problem have owners and they are different people.
